History of Tawang Monastery




 

The second largest Tawang monastery in the world was built by Merak Lama Lodre Gasto around 1680. More than five hundred Buddhist monks associated with Masai Buddhism still live here today. Thousands of people visit the monastery every year. The monastery is located at an altitude of 1,000 feet above sea level. In 1962, the monastery was occupied by China for a few months. However, China later had to withdraw. Being on the banks of the river Tanwag, this monastery is an important place for India and China.

Interesting information about the monastery:

The story behind the construction of this monastery is very interesting. According to legend, Marad Lama Lodre Gyatso's horse reached this place of Chatre-Charte. While searching, his horse was found on the mountain. They felt that this sign was a blessing and decided to build a monastery in this place. The monastery was built with the help of local people. Similarly, another legend is also inspired by the horse, which is said to be related to the prince of Lhasa.

The structure of the monastery

 

Initially, the monastery was built on a small scale. A few years later it was transformed into a magnificent hut. There are pictures of gods and saints on every wall here. The monastery has three floors and a magnificent library. The walls on each floor are made to reflect Buddhist symbols. The monastery has an 18-foot statue of Buddha.
