Corona Crisis: Second wave of Corona may hit India during monsoon
Even though India has limited the impact of the Corona virus epidemic that is wreaking havoc on a global scale, the Indians may have to face the second wave of the epidemic in the upcoming monsoon. Scientists have warned that a sudden increase in the number of people infected with the corona virus is expected in late July or August.
Experts have also stated that the timing of infection reaching its peak will depend on how India controls physical distance and the level of infection spread after lockdown have been relaxed.
According to Samit Bhattacharya, Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department of Shiv Nadar University, it seems clear that the graph of new cases is reaching its peak every day and eventually it will fall down. This may take a few weeks or months.
He said, yet we can probably see a surge in new cases of corona virus and this will be the second wave of this epidemic. The second round of the pandemic may probably return during the monsoon in late July or August. However the peak time will depend on how we control social distancing at this time.
Professor Rajesh Sundaresan of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore also agrees with Bhattacharya's estimate. According to Rajesh, once normal activities are started, the chances of infection rising again. China has seen such an effect after easing some restrictions on travel. Rajesh is also the associate author of a working paper on this epidemic by researchers at IISc and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).
Some restrictions continue even after lockdown
The study, made public this week by researchers from the IISc and TIFR, recommends continuation of some restrictions on the end of the lockdown. The researchers made the recommendation after studying the impact of policies such as quarantining a suspect, implemented by the government, and following social distancing.
